The Executive Intelligence Papers · Essay 06
The next system of record
Working title.
A new operator class has been emerging for fifteen years, from the rise of the Chief of Staff in the 2010s to the operating partners of the 2020s. This essay maps that arc, and argues that Executive Intelligence is the system of record the role has been waiting for.

Executive Intelligence did not appear in 2026. It was just named then. The operator class it serves has been emerging for a decade and a half.
The Chief of Staff role moved from the political world into private equity, then into venture-backed companies, then into public-company COO offices. RevOps named a category and found a system of record in Salesforce. Nobody owned the synthesis. The COO-track became a recognized career path. Fractional Chiefs of Staff arrived before the market had a name for them. Senior operating partners at investment firms became a standard function.
At each step, the same gap appeared: the tools were there. The synthesis was not. This essay maps that history and argues that Executive Intelligence is the natural next system of record for the role the market has been building toward for fifteen years.
